Abstract
The text uses a question and answer format to discuss the rates of violence in the United States in comparison with other countries, the physical and emotional abuse of children, child sexual abuse, school and youth violence, and bullying. Additional chapters focus on spouse abuse and intimate and domestic assault against women, rape and sexual assault of adults, and elder abuse and other violence against elderly persons. Further chapters discuss murder and homicide, violence committed by strangers, the relationship between guns and violence, suicide, and the future of violence prevention. The discussion presents varied viewpoints on controversies regarding violence and its control and offers advice for victims of violence, perpetrators of violence, and concerned citizens. The author is a physician and medical school professor who specializes in epidemiology and public health. Lists of resources related to each topic, appended lists of suggested readings related to each chapter, and index
