This article presents concluding remarks and observations regarding the selected papers presented at the 2000 research summit on traumatized children exposed to intimate partner violence.
Abstract
This special journal issue represents the collective efforts of a number of researchers who participated in a research summit titled “Responding to Children Exposed to Domestic Violence: Research Informing Practice and Police” held in December 2000, funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Violence Against Women. Each of the seven articles presented in this issue represent a synthesis of one aspect of the empirical literature pertaining to children exposed to domestic violence. Professionals from a variety of disciplines came together to discuss how research can inform policy and practice to promote the best response for children who are exposed to intimate partner violence. The articles illustrate that the professional awareness of children who are exposed to intimate partner violence has dramatically increased. The articles are good examples of the increasingly sophisticated and practice-oriented research in this area. This concluding article highlights some of the main points of the summit by focusing on the recommendations and main concerns expressed both at the summit and in the articles in relation to methodology, intervention, policy, and theoretical models.
