Papers and summaries of presentations are presented from the 1977 Conference on Computer Security and the Data Encryption Standard. They discuss the current state-of-the art technology for encrypting data and introduce many applications of encryption either implemented or contemplated.
Abstract
The Data Encryption Standard (DES) was published on January 15, 1977, and became effective on July 15, 1977. The Standard specifies an algorithm for use by Federal departments and agencies in the cryptographic protection of unclassified computer data during transmission or in storage. The conference addressed the major computer security aspects related to the DES: risk analysis, physical security, and computer systems security. It also focused on communications security devices, key management, and system design as important elements in the use of data encryption. Other sessions covered current applications of the DES in security projects at the Federal Reserve network, the Advanced Research Projects Agency, and in electronic funds transfer. The final session dealt with the implementation and use of DES within the data communications environment and involving integrated system design, a large-scale integrated circuit implementation of the DES, and a microprocessor controlled large-scale integrated implementation of the DES. The question and answer session is appended. Much of the paper include flow charts and diagrams.
