These curriculum guidelines provide educators with an innovative resource to promote more interactive and open discussion about HIV infection and related risky behaviors among students from kindergarten through the 12th grade.
Abstract
A section on the facilitation of HIV/AIDS education in schools discusses the importance of community support for such education, issues in teaching about AIDS and HIV infection, and teaching strategies. A discussion of the incorporation of HIV/AIDS education into various subjects outlines ways to include it in reading, language arts, geography, history, math, art, and science. Suggestions for teaching about HIV/AIDS are categorized for grades K-3, grades 4-6, grades 7 and 8, and grades 9-12. Other topics discussed are facilitating discussion, sensitivity to cultural difference, and universal precautions for school settings. Curriculum guidelines are presented for grades K-3, grades 4-6, grades 7-8, and grades 9-12. Objectives for the curricula are in the general areas of information/cognitive objectives, behavior/skills objectives, and support/psychosocial/affective objectives. An HIV/AIDS prevention and education bibliography is followed by teacher/educator resources, resources for parents, resources for the "differently abled," and multicultural resources. Also included are lists of general resources for working with diverse cultural communities, community organizations, support services for lesbian and gay youths and their families, comprehensive health education and human services resource libraries, organizations that serve culturally diverse communities, and an additional bibliography.
