This article examines in summary form various aspects of the criminal injuries compensation schemes.
Abstract
It selects such matters as the nature of a 'victim,' the mode of hearing claims, and the nature of recoverable compensation for comparative analysis. It concludes that although the schemes are of relatively recent origin, they are commonplace phenomena in the common law jurisdictions. They are just one manifestation of Western societies' attempts to deal with various forms of victimization, and very often succeed in extending a limited range of compensation to crime victims who have sustained physical injuries.
