This study assessed the rate of mental disorders and evaluated how comorbidity affected the global functioning of 50 male nonintravenous cocaine users who sought drug treatment in an outpatient clinic in Brazil.
Abstract
Information came from interviews conducted with semistructured instruments based on DSM-III-R criteria. All participants met the DSM-III-R criteria for cocaine abuse of cocaine dependence during the last 6 months. The lifetime rate of Axis I or Axis II disorders was 69 percent; the prevalence of anxiety disorders and depressive disorders were 31 percent and 20 percent, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that the number of personality disorders, the number of psychiatric diagnoses, and the presence of depressive and anxiety disorders were significant factors associated with poor global functioning among nonintravenous cocaine addicts.
