IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN JUVENILE DELINQUENCY PROGRAMS.
Abstract
THE PAPER FOCUSES INDIRECTLY ON THE ROLE OF THE GOVERNMENT WITH RESPECT TO COMMUNITY EFFORTS TO ATTACK THE JUVENILE DELINQUENCY PROBLEM MORE EFFECTIVELY. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE COMMUNITY, OR MORE SPECIFICALLY THE NEIGHBORHOOD (INCLUDING A FOCUS ON THE FAMILY), IS ANALYZED FROM A PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE, AND IS SUPPORTED BY PERTINENT DATA FROM THE SOCIAL SCIENCES. VARIOUS STRATEGIES TO DEVELOP GREATER COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT ARE DESCRIBED IN THE TEST. A NUMBER OF AREAS FOR NEEDED RESEARCH, AND A SERIES OF RECOMMENDATIONS THAT WOULD ENHANCE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ANY COMMUNITY-BASED JUVENILE DELINQUENCY PROGRAM, INCLUDING THOSE PROGRAMS THAT ADDRESS THE SPECIFIC PROBLEM OF DIVERSION ARE OUTLINED.
