The US Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance is funding a demonstration program called Community Responses to Drug Abuse in which eight communities in seven major urban areas can develop and implement strategies for eliminating their neighborhoods of drug-related crimes to improve the quality of life for residents.
Abstract
The communities in Chicago; the Bronx; Cleveland; Iowa; Houston; Hartford; and Oakland have identified the primary crime and drug problems in their area and established a task force comprised of law enforcement, public and private agencies, schools and churches, community residents, and local businesses. Critical safety issues, for example creating drug-free school zones, are addressed first followed by longer-term programs including drug education, youth programs, and job training. The eight programs are profiled with program focus and accomplishments as of October 1990.
