This collection of readings presents many of the original writings that have assisted in promulgating a vast amount of literature on the topic of community policing over the past 20 years.
Abstract
The collection combines many of the early articles written by academics with a number of articles written by police practitioners who are pioneers in the community policing movement. The collection also includes Federal documents that have greatly assisted police departments in their transition from traditional policing to community policing. The collection is divided into five key parts that contain 19 articles on community policing. The five parts cover the origins of community policing, the community policing philosophy, a systemic approach to community policing, the organization and management of community policing, and actors involved in community policing. The final part of the collection deals with the use and misuse of history in recent police patrol analysis, and underlying assumptions of community policing. Individual articles address such topics as problem-oriented policing, fear of crime, values in policing, and police accountability. References and notes
