ESSENTIAL STEPS IN CRIME PREVENTION AND RESIDENTIAL SECURITY ARE REVIEWED; WAYS TO ORGANIZE AND PUBLICIZE A BLOCK SECURITY PROGRAM ARE LISTED.
Abstract
THIS GUIDE FOR POLICE AND CONCERNED CITIZENS DESCRIBES SUCCESSFUL BLOCK CLUB CRIME PREVENTION PROJECTS, TENANT ORGANIZATIONS AND PATROLS, AND COMMUNITYWIDE ANTICRIME CRUSADES. OTHER POLICE PROGRAMS HAVE INCLUDED CRISIS INTERVENTION TEAMS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, SPECIAL PROGRAMS AIMED AT YOUTH, AND SPECIAL AID AND CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS FOR THE ELDERLY. BOTH COMMUNITY AID AND PHYSICAL RESIDENTIAL SECURITY ARE DISCUSSED. STEPS WHICH SHOULD BE TAKEN BY A CONCERNED COMMUNITY TO ORGANIZE A CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAM ARE DETAILED. SAMPLES OF MATERIALS WHICH ARE AVAILABLE TO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT OR SUCH GROUPS ARE REPRODUCED. EMPHASIS IS ON ENLISTING POLICE COOPERATION, REACHING EVERYONE IN THE AREA WITH THE MESSAGE, AND DEVELOPING THE AREA'S OWN NEWSLETTERS, POSTERS, AND OTHER MATERIALS. A SAMPLE NEWSLETTER, INEXPENSIVELY REPRODUCED, IS APPENDED. SOURCES OF FUNDS FOR COMMUNITY PROJECTS ARE GIVEN. THESE INCLUDE THE OFFICE OF COMMUNITY ANTI-CRIME PROGRAMS OF LEAA, FOUNDATIONS (CORPORATE, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY TYPES), OR COMMUNITY GROUPS.
