This report describes the approaches and strategies used by 10 community-based programs to prevent alcohol and other drug abuse and related problems.
Abstract
The groups are all non-profit organizations that work in low and moderate income neighborhoods and have decided to address the problems of alcohol and other drug use and crime in their communities. Project costs range from almost nothing to more than $1 million, and all the projects depend greatly on the involvement of volunteers and community residents. Some groups took small-scale actions that mobilized community residents, some developed partnerships and coalitions, some developed comprehensive community development initiatives, and some created opportunities for positive youth development. The programs demonstrate that successful prevention efforts are community-based and the result of good community organizing, planning for a sustained commitment, networking and information sharing, and the use of the variety of resources available. Photographs, footnotes, and lists of technical assistance providers, information clearinghouses, and publications available from other sources.
