Reflecting the themes of cooperation and the future in crime prevention, the topics addressed in these conference proceedings include: provincial, national, and international dimensions of crime prevention; local issues in crime prevention; interagency cooperation; social development and crime prevention; voluntary organizations and the private sector; and institutional changes and leadership.
Abstract
Several broad and overlapping themes emerge from these presentations and discussions: crime prevention needs to be dealt with seriously and in a way that considers underlying related factors; special populations, minorities and youth in particular, demand special attention on the part of those concerned about crime prevention; crime needs to be more broadly defined to consider more than those types of incidents that are immediately obvious or to create the impression of disorder; police no longer can operate in self-defined professional isolation; research and evaluation of crime prevention activities is essential; crime prevention cannot be the sole prerogative or responsibility of any single agency or institution; and meaningful crime prevention is based in the local community, serves community-defined needs, and is community controlled and led. The proceedings conclude with recommendations for action.
