This textbook is designed to help law enforcement officers improve all their communications, especially their oral communications, based on the view that effective communication is an integral part of all law enforcement work.
Abstract
An overview explains the role and importance of communication in law enforcement, the basic components of the communication process, and the functions of communications. Underlying principles and practical guidelines are given for giving attention and listening, interviews, communication in different types of small groups, and public speaking. Nonverbal communication is also explained. Barriers to communication are examined in terms of their role, effect, types, and techniques for dealing with them are given. Methods of improving communication among individuals and groups from different cultures and races are also detailed. The ethics of communications are also explained and applied to issues encountered in law enforcement. The roles and techniques of communication by law enforcement leadership, communication within and between agencies, and communications with the community are also presented. Name and subject indexes.
