Prepared for corrections staff by the Victorian (Australia) Office of Corrections and the Health Department, this booklet summarizes information about the AIDS virus, its transmission, and precautions that prison staff should adopt.
Abstract
A section on AIDS facts defines HIV positive, describes symptoms of AIDS, and outlines the course of the illness. Statistics on the incidence and spread of AIDS in Victoria are detailed. The booklet emphasizes that, since no cure is available, the only logical approach is prevention. Ways that the HIV virus is spread are outlined, as are methods to prevent transmission. A discussion of HIV in the workplace notes that police and prison officials are at lesser risk than health workers. There have been no known cases of workers in either category being infected at work in Victoria. Recommended precautions for prison officers address body and cell searching and first aid. Sources of additional information on AIDS are appended.
