This document presents the 2011 annual review of new technologies and resources offered by the Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office to improve the effectiveness of military and civilian security forces.
Abstract
The Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office (CTTSO) was established by the U.S. Department of Defense in 1999 to consolidate the research and development programs in the Department aimed at improving the effectiveness of military and civilian security forces in their anti-terrorism efforts. The CTTSO works with governmental organizations in Australia, Canada, Israel, Singapore, and the United Kingdom to ensure anti-terrorism programs encompass military, security services, and first responder organizations. This review presents an overview of new technologies and resources offered by CTTSO to assist law enforcement agencies in their anti-terrorism efforts. The review is presented in six sections. The Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office presents an overview of the organization of the CTTSO. Two sections, the Technical Support Working Group (TSWG) and the Technical Support Working Group Subgroups, examine the history and mission of the TSWG and its subgroups. Some of the issues examined by the subgroups include advanced analytical capabilities; chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear countermeasures; explosives detection; improvised device defeat; and tactical operations support. The next two sections of the review discuss the Explosive Ordnance Disposal/Low-Intensity Conflict Program and the Irregular Warfare Support Program. The final section of the document examines CTTSO's outreach efforts. Figures, photographs, and appendix
