This handbook describes a wide range of comprehensive collaborative anti-drug strategies that managers of State- assisted housing can implement.
Abstract
Nine model programs for drug prevention and elimination in public housing are described. For each program there is a brief description, a target audience, funding sources, and a contact person. One program uses satellite offices for outreach, education, prevention, general referral services, and community efforts. Another program uses counseling, lectures, job training, and after-school activities for its youth, and a third uses a drug coordinator, a tenants' patrol, local police, the Office of the Mayor, and various social service agencies. Other programs provide individual counseling, group counseling, family therapy, psychological services, job training, and referrals. Eight sources of funding and technical assistance for drug prevention and elimination are described, and strategies for the eviction of drug-abusing and drug trafficking residents are described. Pertinent laws are reviewed. A hotline directory for combating drugs in housing is also provided.
