The Colorado Women's Correctional Facility provides a complete academic curriculum from the elementary school level through an associate's degree program at a local college.
Abstract
Most women are enrolled in the Adult Basic Education (ABE) program, which uses a variety of techniques and materials including one-on-one instruction, computers, and videotapes to encourage and challenge the women inmates. The program's primary academic goal is to help women whose communications skills make it difficult for them to obtain and retain jobs; its main social goal is to help inmates develop positive self-concepts, coping and survival skills, and the desire to remain in society as successful individuals. The facility also offers educational programs to help students earn their GED's, as well as business, computer, and horticulture courses. The program instructors must learn to deal with students who often resent authority figures; may have mild retardation, learning disabilities, and emotional disorders; and who come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Among the program's goals are to teach patience, tolerance, and understanding. 2 references
