CHILD NEGLECT IS A SEVERE SOCIAL PROBLEM WITH MANY GREY AREAS - HARD TO DEFINE PRECISELY OR TREAT SUCCESSFULLY AND DIFFICULT TO PREVENT.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR CITES A 1975 'STATE OF KNOWLEDGE' SURVEY OF THE LITERATURE, ACCOMPLISHMENTS, AND NEEDS IN THE AREA OF CHILD NEGLECT (AS SEPARATE FROM CHILD ABUSE) - PROFILE OF NEGLECT - IN A DISCUSSION OF A WORKABLE DEFINITION OF NEGLECT, ITS PREVALENCE AND REPORTING, AND THE USE OF A 'CHILDHOOD LEVEL OF LIVING SCALE' TO RATE NEGLECT. THIS SCALE WAS DEVELOPED OUT OF A CONCERN FOR CHILDREN RECEIVING CARE THOUGHT TO BE MARGINAL OR NEGLECTFUL AND INCLUDES EVALUATION OF BASIC PHYSICAL CARE ALONG WITH MEASURES OF COGNITIVE-EMOTIONAL BEHAVIOR. (THE SECOND PART OF THIS ARTICLE DEALS WITH THE IDENTITY AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NEGLECTED CHILD AND WHAT CAN BE DONE FOR HIM.)
