This study looked at the potential role the armed forces could play in crime prevention.
Abstract
Research has shown that males between the ages of 16 and 24 commit a disproportionate amount of crime. The armed forces are a major employer of young males “during their crime prone years.” For this reason, the armed forces could really play a significant role in preventing crime. The study showed that countries with a large military force have lower homicide rates. Nations with the military draft have higher homicide rates than countries with an all-volunteer force. The two control variables that were used (income inequality and male population) had a tremendous influence on homicide rates. The researcher’s purpose was to examine the relationship between the armed forces and “violent-crime rates in a cross-national study.” The study used data from 65 countries from 1995 to 1999 and the data was obtained from 5 different sources.
