The Azjen-Fishbein cognitive model of aggression was tested with an aggressive adult subpopulation in an experimental setting.
Abstract
Fifty-one patients in a Federal forensic hospital completed research questionnaires administered during psychological testing sessions and participated in role-played assessment of aggression. Independent variables included the cognitive components of the model: attitude toward the behavior; subjective norm; and intention, personality variables, previous offenses, and self-reported ratings of arousal. Path analysis and multiple regressions of the results suggest that cognitive variables only partially mediated aggressive behavior and that arousal and trait anger exerted significant effects on aggression, independent of the cognitive components of the Azjen-Fishbein model. Cognitive predispositions toward violence need further careful assessment and cross-classification with basic types of behavioral and situational outcomes including rearrest and reconvictions of probationers and parolees for violent offenses. 2 figures, 3 tables, 2 notes, and 48 references (Author abstract modified)
