Activities and evaluation methodology and results are presented for a community crime prevention program in Memphis, Tenn.
Abstract
The goal of the CoDe Two crime prevention project has been to promote a safer community through the reduction of criminal activities within the CoDe North community anticrime target area. Activities for the period of the grant (October 1, 1978, through September 14, 1981) have included the initiation and sponsorship of the following crime-prevention efforts: workshops, literature, Operation Identification, neighborhood watch, home security checks, and issuance and installation of security devices. Block clubs have been formed, including a block club association. Training has been given to block club captains. Community leadership training has involved career awareness seminars, primary intervention sessions, and self-development training. The project has also been active in educational and vocational counseling, home visits, referrals, neighborhood cleanup campaigns, and the creation of public awareness of the health hazards of lead-based paint. Evaluation activities have included direct supervision and onsite visits, monthly and quarterly reports, statistical analysis, and the collection and comparison of criminal statistics. The project has been apparently successful. Crime has decreased; education and skills associated with community development have improved; and relationships among residents and between police and residents have improved. Information and materials related to the project are provided.
