This report focuses on proposals for reform with regard to female prisoners.
Abstract
The Coalition for Women Prisoners in New York is a statewide alliance of over 500 individuals from over 100 organizations working toward improving the criminal justice system as it affects women offenders and their families. The rapidly growing number of incarcerated women is a reflection of prison being utilized for problems that should be dealt with through community-based alternative programs, which would address why women commit crimes. This report also elaborates on issues women face while incarcerated such as mothers and their children, domestic violence survivors in prison, sexual abuse of women prisoners, medical and mental health of women prisoners, and transitional services and work release rules for female prisons. This report found that the inadequacies of services available to women in prison undermine their ability to successfully reintegrate with their communities, reconnect with their families, and lead crime free lives upon release from prison.
