A survey was conducted in Southampton, England, in 1980 to ascertain whether the location, setting, time, and nature of 557 incidents involving violence exhibited any particular patterns which could serve as indicators to possible preventative measures geared to specific situations.
Abstract
In 377 of the 557 cases, pubs and clubs were either the scene of the crime or linked to it. Over half of all incidents occurred during the night shift, with Friday and Saturday accounting for almost half the offenses. Certain pubs licensed to remain open very late were the scene of violent offenses, as were certain restaurants. The local hospital, the football ground, houses used for prostitution, welfare institutions, and certain shops suffered problems. Police and the public should pressure the management of late-night establishments to reduce the factors leading to violence. The public should be informed about these troublespots. Study data and six references are included. (Author summary modified)
