Positive citizen action is needed to fight alcohol and other drug problems, and this directory lists Federal, State, and national organizations in which the public can become involved.
Abstract
The directory was developed specifically for citizens who are interested in learning more about alcohol and drug abuse prevention and in becoming involved in prevention services and activities. A broad overview of alcohol and drug abuse prevention is presented including a definition of prevention and a discussion of theoretical and pragmatic foundations of prevention programs and research. The Federal Government's role in prevention is examined by agency. Various national, not-for-profit, and nonprofit voluntary and professional agencies involved in alcohol and drug abuse prevention are listed. An address and telephone number are given for each organization, along with information on program services and the targeted audience. Prevention activities and resources at the State level are identified, and the role of State government in prevention programs is discussed. Services of major national prevention resources and information providers are noted. A glossary of terms commonly used in the alcohol and drug abuse prevention field is provided.
