This handbook is designed to increase educators' understanding of the relationship between maltreatment and chronic acting-out children (CAC's).
Abstract
An introduction provides an overview of subject matter and purpose, and explains terms, acronyms, psychiatric/psychological diagnoses, acting-out behavior, and effects of abuse and neglect on children. A detailed description of CAC's is followed by a discussion of legal, psychiatric, educational, and resource barriers to intervention. The text explains an intervention instrument, the Sujkaryu Assessment Profile; identifies principles for a design management strategy for schools; and declares a need for systems advocates within the educational system, school social worker services, and interagency cooperation. It lists projects, laws, and other initiatives related to responding to CAC's, and discusses special education, corporal punishment, school crime, dropouts, suspensions and expulsions. It emphasizes advocacy and calls for change, making specific recommendations for schools, legislatures and involved organizations. Three case histories are provided. Index and 4-page bibliography.
