Traffic congestion problems and possible solutions in Anne Arundel County (Maryland) are discussed in this article.
Abstract
Traffic congestion problems fall into two distinct categories: recurring, caused by known "choke areas" (bottlenecks in areas of excessive use) and nonrecurring, caused by unpredictable events such as accidents, spilled loads, or disabled vehicles. The strategic solution for recurring congestion lies in the hands of traffic engineers by expanding the roadway system and modifying existing roadway configurations. Police departments can develop operational procedures that will be effective in reducing nonrecurring congestion. These procedures include the timely detection of traffic incidents and prompt notification of the police, rapid response time (possibly through the use of motorcycles and aircraft), efficient scene clearance, and alternate route plans through media assistance and interagency cooperation.
