THIS DOCUMENT DESCRIBES THE THEORY AND OBJECTIVES OF THE ENGLISH CONCEPT OF INTERMEDIATE TREATMENT FOR JUVENILE DELINQUENCY, AND ANALYZES TEN SUCH TREATMENT PROGRAMS.
Abstract
THE AUTHORS BEGIN THIS STUDY OF A NEW CONCEPT OF WORK WITH CHILDREN IN TROUBLE BY RETRACING THE STEPS OF THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATIONS WHICH INTRODUCED IT, AND OFFERING CRITICISM OF REGIONAL PLANNING. THE MIDDLE SECTION, WHICH COMPRISES NEARLY HALF OF THE BOOK, DESCRIBES IN DETAIL THE WORK OF TEN INTERMEDIATE TREATMENT PROJECTS, AND BEGINS AN ANALYSIS OF THE TECHNIQUES AND APPROACHES WHICH THEY EMPLOY. THE FINAL DEVELOPMENTAL SECTION, BUILDING ON THIS ANALYSIS AND THE CRITICAL MATERIAL OF THE FIRST TWO CHAPTERS, DRAWS OUT A THEORY OF INTERMEDIATE TREATMENT AS A CONTINUUM OF CARE, AND DESCRIBES THE PLANNING REQUIREMENTS AND RESOURCES WHICH WILL BE NECESSARY FOR ITS CONSTRUCTION. THE AUTHORS ALSO DISCUSS THE SOCIAL AND POLITICAL CONTEXT IN WHICH INTERMEDIATE TREATMENT WILL TAKE PLACE, AND OUTLINE THE NEGOTIATIONS THAT SOCIAL WORKERS WITH YOUNG PEOPLE WILL NEED TO MAINTAIN WITH VARIOUS OTHER AGENCIES.
