This document contains the presentations, final report, and recommendations of a United Nations expert meeting on the use and application of international juvenile justice instruments.
Abstract
The agenda of the expert meeting focused on three general areas: the exploitation of children, international standards and norms in the field of juvenile justice, and the implementation of those standards. In the first area, the participants considered the issues of violence against children through the sale of children and child prostitution and pornography, and the instrumental use of children in and for criminal activities. Under the second rubric, participants discussed the underlying ideologies which inform international standards of juvenile justice, and debated major issues pertaining to the misuse of custody and the conditions under which juveniles are detained. Finally, participants discussed various means by which the implementation of existing international standards may be rendered more feasible.
