The Child Sexual Behavior Inventory (CSBI) was used to evaluate a sample of boys admitted to a children's inpatient psychiatric unit in a large children's hospital.
Abstract
The CSBI was supplemented by the Traumatic Antecedents Scale and the Family Sexuality Questionnaire to establish a history of sexual abuse. Differences were noted on the 43-item version of the CSBI completed by parents between boys reporting sexual abuse and those not reporting sexual abuse. CSBI ratings completed by inpatient staff did not reveal significant differences. CSBI items which discriminated somewhat between the small sample cells used in the study are described. Study findings are discussed in relation to the sexual behavior of boys on the inpatient psychiatric unit. Due to limitations of the CSBI, the authors recommend clinicians be cautious in using the instrument for decisionmaking until more data are available. Additional studies are needed to establish not only the concurrent or criterion validity of the CSBI but also to study usual CSBI scores for normal children and those exposed to various types of nudity, peer experimentation, and explicit television. 23 references and 3 tables
