This report presents findings from all the child sexual abuse research and demonstration projects funded since 1985 that have submitted final reports to the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect.
Abstract
These projects focused on the characteristics and dynamics of child sexual abuse; the impact of system responses on child victims and their families; and refinements in existing practices, procedures, and protocols used in child sexual abuse cases. The findings underscore the magnitude of the problem and the variability in the conditions and impact of child sexual abuse. The studies identify underreported and underserved populations, clarify the differential effects of childhood abuse, examine the efficacy of prevention and intervention strategies, and explore available treatment options. They note the lack of knowledge regarding the effectiveness of school-based prevention programs, the need for community-wide prevention awareness, the importance of establishing interagency protocols to effectively guide sexual abuse investigations and improve coordination, and significant gaps in available treatment services.
