This discussion guide accompanies a video that portrays the nature, functions, and coordination of multidisciplinary teams in child sexual abuse investigations.
Abstract
This discussion guide contains questions that are pertinent to the video that will help trainers stimulate the interchange of ideas among trainees about the use of multidisciplinary teams in child sexual abuse investigations. Following suggested discussion questions, a section of the guide presents ideas for additional training activities based on the video. Another section of the guide provides background information on the multidisciplinary team approach, including a list of questions that should be considered in the development of a memorandum of agreement for multidisciplinary teamwork. The background information in the guide advises that generally multidisciplinary teams consist of representatives from law enforcement, child protective services, prosecution, and the medical profession. Other team members may include mental health professionals, victim services advocates, and guardians ad litem. Although the initial response and investigation are conducted by law enforcement and child welfare personnel working together, all members of the team must be involved in a coordinated and collaborative approach in case processing. A handout packet provides materials that supplement the video and stimulate discussion. The packet contains information on potential sources of conflict between law enforcement and child protective services, questions that assist in creating a memorandum of understanding among team members, and resources for further reading.
