Annotation

These discussions of child protective services focused on the strengths and weaknesses of the current system, the efforts to resolve current problems, the guidelines developed by the National Association of Public Child Welfare Administrators, and recommendations for further changes.

Abstract

Participants in the discussions, which were part of a larger symposium on child sexual abuse, included Federal and State officials, representatives of advocacy groups, academicians, and clinicians. Topics included the increase in cases, the lack of increases in resources to address the problems, difficulties in identifying child abuse and neglect, the lack of a consistent framework for decisionmaking, the need for interagency cooperation, and the responsibility of protective services to both the child and the family.
