This packet contains information about child physical abuse, suggestions concerning child discipline procedures that do not involve physical punishment, and a literature review.
Abstract
An information sheet on child physical abuse, prepared by the National Resource Center on Child Abuse and Neglect, describes how to recognize signs of child abuse, and alternatives to physical punishment when disciplining children. Sources of further information are given, as well as information on finding help if child physical abuse is suspected. Also included are a pamphlet that provides additional information on factors leading to abuse, helping the abusive parent, helping the abused child, prevention programs, community supports, and a bibliography. An article (with references) reviews the research literature about predictors of severe and fatal physical child abuse, an important question for the design of risk assessment instruments for use at child welfare intake. A separate article (with references) reviews the literature about physical child abuse perpetrator characteristics.
