This article discusses the merits of child custody evaluations in family dissolution cases.
Abstract
This commentary argues that competent child custody evaluations are necessary for families in dispute regarding their children's best interests. Child custody evaluators are noted, in a very brief piece, to provide an essential court-related service on which family judges depend, and these psychologists assist judges to understand the needs of a particular family in a dissolution case by providing a thorough assessment of the family. Another brief discussion is provided on the benefit of these evaluations to families. In addition to the benefits a child custody evaluation provides to the court, it is stated that families obtained information, clarification, and education regarding the best interest of their children, and that these benefits increase the potential of settling family disputes by allaying anxieties and fears. It is noted that there is a need for an increased number of qualified child custody evaluators. References
