The goal of the Child and Adolescent Service System Program (CASSP) is to increase the availability of community-based, comprehensive, coordinated systems of care for seriously emotionally disturbed children and adolescents.
Abstract
The Federal CASSP strategy is to assist States through various mechanisms to assume leadership in promoting the development of systems of care for severely emotionally disturbed children and youth. CASSP provides grant support, supplemented by technical assistance, to State mental health agencies or State children's agencies that have primary responsibility for child mental health services. State-level activities include needs assessment and planning, modification of the State mental health system, interagency collaboration, constituency building, technical assistance and training, and local system development. CASSP strategies are planned actions that State agencies can take to promote care for severely emotionally disturbed children and youth. A brief discussion of specific CASSP strategies is included, and factors affecting strategy implementation are identified. An exercise to help States establish strategy directions for CASSP-related efforts is provided.
