This booklet offers educators, community organizations, and concerned adults practical information and guidance in choosing a child abuse prevention education program that is responsive to the unique needs of their communities.
Abstract
Responding to the problem of child abuse and the increasing awareness of child sexual abuse, large numbers of children are receiving prevention education. These prevention programs are being offered through schools and community organizations. This booklet created by the Georgia Council on Child Abuse assists educators and community organizations in locating the necessary information and tools in choosing a child abuse prevention education program. The Council works to identify prevention curricula targeting both children and adults and focusing on the multiple forms of abuse that children might have experienced. The booklet was intended as a starting point for prevention initiatives and suggestions were made that it be used in conjunction with other resources identified in the booklet’s bibliography. Educators and community organizations armed with an understanding of the developmental needs of the target population and knowledge of the current research in the field are able to make informed and reasonable decisions for program selection.
