A SELF-INSTRUCTIONAL TEXT DESIGNED TO HELP HEAD START WORKERS IDENTIFY AND DEAL EFFECTIVELY WITH CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT IS PRESENTED.
Abstract
HEAD START CENTERS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES PROVIDE SERVICES TO HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PRESCHOOL CHILDREN DAILY. HEAD START STAFF MEMBERS ARE IN A UNIQUE POSITION TO IDENTIFY FAMILIES IN TROUBLE. TO ASSIST THEM IN THIS TASK, THE SELF-INSTRUCTIONAL TEXT PRESENTS BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT ABUSE AND NEGLECT IN A FORMAT THAT TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE VARIETY OF BACKGROUNDS AMONG HEAD START PERSONNEL. THE MATERIALS ARE PRESENTED IN EIGHT UNITS: HEAD START POLICY ON ABUSE AND NEGLECT, BACKGROUND INFORMATION, DEFINITIONS, ABUSIVE AND NEGLECTFUL PATTERNS, CHARACTERISTICS OF ABUSE AND NEGLECT, REPORTING, TREATMENT, AND PREVENTION. EACH UNIT CONTAINS AN ANSWER-KEYED 'STIMULUS QUIZ' AT THE BEGINNING AND SELF-ASSESSMENT QUIZ AT THE END, AND A STATEMENT OF THE UNIT'S LEARNING OBJECTIVES. THE TEXT ALSO PROVIDES A BIBLIOGRAPHY, A LIST OF SOURCES OF ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, AND GUIDELINES TO HELP HEAD START ADMINISTRATORS USE THE TEXT, IMPLEMENT POLICY INSTRUCTION ON ABUSE AND NEGLECT, AND DETERMINE THEIR AGENCY'S COMPLIANCE WITH HEAD START POLICY REGARDING SUCH INSTRUCTION.
