The Second Annual National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect, held in Houston in April 1977, involved 1,100 participants and experts from the fields of social work, psychology, psychiatry, medicine, government, education, and law.
Abstract
In four major plenary sessions, leaders from the various disciplines discussed roles of the family, the community, State and Federal governments, and the political process in dealing with the problems posed by child maltreatment. In addition, 25 panels and 80 workshops provided detailed information and discussion relating to the many issues of child abuse and neglect and suggested various levels of intervention with children, parents, families, communities, legislatures, and the Federal Government. A theme permeating the entire conference proceedings was that child abuse is not merely a private affair between caretakers and children, but rather a crisis that affects and is affected by the entire community. Specific conference presentations focused on family systems, cultural and crosscultural perspectives, emotional abuse, child abuse prevention, public awareness, service deliery systems, and intervention strategies of assessment and treatment.
