This student's manual for a child abuse and neglect (CAN) intervention training workshop examines casework roles and responsibilities from intake and reporting through intervention, with a focus on the interface between social service and criminal justice professionals.
Abstract
General, multidisciplinary workshop sessions cover (1) the decisions facing the family and the professionals involved in CAN cases, social services and legal caseflows, and the roles and responsibilities of various professionals (law enforcement, child protection, school, medical, legal, and social service) in dependency and criminal proceedings; (2) indicators of CAN and approaches to intervention; (3) evidence collection in CAN cases, interviewing child victims, and child and family reactions to CAN interventions; and (4) methods for improving intra-agency and interagency interventions through effective advocacy and communication skills. Additional materials cover strategies for serving as an effective witness in CAN criminal proceedings and the responsibilities of and skills needed by the guardian ad litem in CAN proceedings, including interpersonal, assertiveness, and conflict resolution skills. Materials for each session include an outline and summary, the session content, and handouts.
