This text compiles data on all the homicides in the Chicago Police Department murder analysis report files from 1965 through 1981.
Abstract
Coding instructions are presented, and categories for each piece of information gathered over the years are noted. Problems with data interpretation are outlined, and a section of recodes is included. This section condenses variables such as 'type of weapon,' which has almost 100 categories, into fewer categories. Finally, the program that created the system file is included. Eleven publications that use the Chicago homicide data set are listed.
