This workbook is designed to help youth, in concert with adults, acquire the knowledge and follow the procedure for developing action plans and programs designed to prevent crime.
Abstract
The book is divided into three sections: facts on crime, facts on teen victimization, and project planning. The first two sections ground the user in facts about crime and in motivation to do something abut it, and the latter section of the book involves youth in specific exercises designed to identify a project and develop a plan. The first step in plan development is an assessment of a community's needs. Topics covered include community parameters and definition, information sources, community survey, survey checklist, a school survey on crime and crime prevention, problem selection, and force field analysis. Step two provides guidelines for planning a successful project; and step three involves the development and solicitation of resources, including volunteer recruitment, volunteer application, recruiting adults, and finding materials. Step four provides guidance in acting on the plan. It discusses training, estimated training time for types of teen crime prevention projects, training planner, leadership in bringing the group together, and ways to give recognition to teen crime prevention volunteers. Step five discusses program evaluation. Sample forms are included along with a list of national resources.
