Conviction and sentencing characteristics, including conviction offense, multiple sentences, prior commitments, and maximum sentence of persons entering parole during 1978 and 1979 are examined in Section II. The route by which the 1978 and 1979 parolees were admitted to prison and the length of time served are discussed in Section III, which also includes time served for those entering parole in 1976 and 1977. For most States included in this report, there appears to have been an increase in the median number of months served for inmates released to parole over the period from 1976 to 1979. Whether changes in offense patterns, sentencing laws, good-time policies, or parole board practices lie behind this shift, it contributes to increased crowding in correction facilities across the Nation. A brief discussion of distribution by sex, age at parole entry, race/ethnicity, and education appears in Section IV. For race/ethnicity and education, parolees are compared to the general population. A description of the status of persons entering parole during 1978, 1 year after release, is provided in Section V. Data for all figures presented in the narrative section are included. Appendixes contain supplementary data on persons entering parole 1979, during 1978, and in prior years. parole from 1976 to 1979, and data collection method and forms. 1979, during 1978, and in prior years.
