This article briefly discusses the challenges and successes faced in the field of forensic psychiatric research.
Abstract
Research issues in the field of forensic psychiatry are very complex. For example, individuals with mental disorders require many years of follow-up and are necessary to compile definitive answers. In addition, forensic psychiatric research relies on government funding and is at a great risk of being led into a search for evidence to support fashionable or political ideas. This article reviews the many challenges faced, as well as the many successes reached in forensic psychiatric research. It highlights forensic psychiatric research focusing on need and treatment responses, the need to train others to leave to be professors elsewhere, and the impact of past and present research contributions. Even though there is great agreement on the relationship and connection between mental disorder and violence, there are vast disagreements over mechanisms and solutions. These discrepancies and disagreements in research can lead to researchers to the next study. References
