During 1982, the Home Office Central Research Establishment (CRE) conducted research in several major areas, including immunoassays, semen constituents in stains, diatoms in the diagnosis of death by drowning, nonhuman species identification, alcohol breath testing, fingerprints, paint fibers, and drugs.
Abstract
Research was also done in microspectrometry, the use of the interference objective for examining glass surfaces, arson, explosives, and analysis of small samples of blood and urine. CRE devised a general method for the extraction of all benzodiazepines and other alkaloidal and neutral drugs from blood and did research in mass spectrometry, the interpretation of drugs and metabolite levels, and drug intelligence, concentrating on heroin. Activities of the Operational Services Division are noted. Appendixes list current projects, casework statistics, CRE publications, and personnel matters and provide directories.
