This fact sheet outlines the four levels of protection in the development of a new NIJ chemical/biological/radiological/nuclear (CBRN) ensemble standard for law enforcement.
Abstract
Chemical/biological/radiological/nuclear (CBRN) hazards to law enforcement include chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemicals, biological derived toxins or pathogen and radiological particulate hazards, which have the potential to inflict bodily harm, incapacitation, or death. These CBRN hazards may result from accidents or deliberate, malicious acts with the intent to cause harm or kill. The U.S. Department of Justice, National Institute of Justice (NIJ) in developing an ensemble standard for the protection of law enforcement against CBRN threats defines, in this fact sheet, four law enforcement response levels (LERLs) of protection for ensembles based on mission requirements, expected mission duration, durability, and CBRN threat environments.
