BASED ON A SURVEY OF POLICE PLANNING AND RESEARCH UNITS, A CATALOG IS PROVIDED OF PRACTICAL, INHOUSE RESEARCH EFFORTS WHICH PRODUCE DATA POLICE DEPARTMENTS CAN RELATE AND APPLY TO THEIR OWN PARTICULAR SITUATION.
Abstract
THE TWOFOLD PURPOSE OF THE SURVEY WAS TO (1) PROVIDE AN EXTENSIVE CATALOG OF STAFF STUDIES AND PROJECTS IN ORDER TO FACILITATE THE EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION AND EXPERIENCE AMONG POLICE AGENCIES, AND (2) COLLECT RELEVANT INFORMATION CONCERNING THE ORGANIZATIONAL NATURE OF POLICE PLANNING AND RESEARCH UNITS. OF THE 109 DEPARTMENTS CONTACTED, 76 RESPONDED TO THIS 1977 SURVEY. OF THE 90 DEPARTMENTS RESPONDING TO THE ORIGINAL 1974 SURVEY, 62 PROVIDED UPDATED 1977 INFORMATION. IN TOTAL, 104 DEPARTMENTS ARE LISTED--67 CONTAINING INFORMATION CURRENT TO APRIL 1977, AND 28 WITH INFORMATION CURRENT AS OF DECEMBER 1974. THE ENTIRE CATALOG CONTAINS 344 SEPARATE LISTINGS OF PROJECTS OR STUDIES PERFORMED BY THE VARIOUS PLANNING AND RESEARCH UNITS AROUND THE COUNTRY. MOST OF THESE LISTINGS HAVE BRIEF ANNOTATIONS DESCRIBING THE PROJECT OF STUDY. A WIDE RANGE OF POLICE ACTIVITIES ARE EXAMINED, INCLUDING TEAM POLICING, COMMUNICATIONS AND DATA PROCESSING, CIVILIANIZATION, PATROL ALLOCATION, WOMEN IN POLICING, INVESTIGATION AND INTELLIGENCE, FIELD REPORTING, AND RESPONSE TIME ANALYSES.
