Abstract
According to this publication, approximately 340,000 vehicles are stolen each year in England, Scotland, and Wales. This number has been steadily decreasing since 1992. The Car Theft Index is presented, which shows the makes and models of cars that are most at risk of theft in England, Scotland, and Wales. The Car Theft Index is based on 2001 theft data obtained from the Police National Computer and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). This publication cautions that not all car models are included in this Index, only those models with sufficient numbers on the road to provide reliable statistical data. This publication also discusses security measures that can be taken by owners of cars, including buying car models that are not typically targeted by car thieves. Other suggestions include proper use of door and window locks and other security devices such as alarms. The Car Theft Index notes the risk of theft of each make and model of car through the use of a color-coded system, with red indicating those makes and models most at risk and green indicating those makes and models least at risk of theft. Resources and contact information for advice on further security measures is offered.
