Because of the large yearly turnover in the student population, it is necessary to begin a security and crime prevention education program in the freshman year, with additional programs for upper classmen, graduate students, and summer school students.
Abstract
Special prevention activities on college and university campuses include rape prevention, neighborhood watch programs, and library and bicycle theft prevention. Many campuses find that marking items of value (Operation Identification), installing intrusion alarms, and encouraging students to travel in groups are effective crime prevention activities. Because a campus police force has goals and responsibilities that differ from those of a community police force, it required a different form of administrative organization. A plan for a directed patrol program for a college campus and a sample campus security manual are included in appendixes.
