The Study Group on Violence formed by Zero to Three/National Center for Clinical Infant Program recommends the use of several initial steps toward alleviating the effects of violence in our Nation's homes, communities, and society.
Abstract
Zero to Three calls on politicians, the media, law enforcement, and other behavioral disciplines to become advocates for the reduction of violence through a three- point agenda. The recommended agenda features a family- centered approach to addressing trauma/prevention, a realignment of values, and informed comprehensive public policy strategies for reducing violence. The family-centered emphasis would help parents to cope with the violent environment in which they live. They need information on what to tell their children about violence and skills to guide their children in the use of nonviolent means to resolve problems. A realignment of values would focus on a reduction in our tolerance for violence. Politicians should bring together parents, educators, and media leaders to launch a campaign that will change our national attitudes toward violence and our tolerance of violent behavior. Legislators at all governmental levels must develop a rational strategy for addressing violence. Policies should address easy access to guns, coordinate operations that target violence, and reduce the amount of violence children can watch on television and in movies.
