The rapid spread of programs that fall within restorative or community justice frameworks reflects long-standing frustration with reactive and repressive responses to crime and a strong desire among citizens and criminal justice practitioners alike for more constructive approaches that seek to repair the harm from crime and to promote greater community peace.
Abstract
Community groups and victims are working in partnership with criminal justice agencies to address both preconditions of crime and problems caused by crime in new ways. In this regard, leaders are needed who can play a transformational role in mobilizing support for corrections policies that are consistent with emerging perspectives. New ways of thinking about corrections and new correctional programs and practices may fundamentally redefine the nature and role of the criminal justice system. Leaders need to recognize that the movement toward restorative or community justice is relevant to the entire criminal justice system and not just to the community corrections component. 13 references
